Candy that is Perfect for Cake Decorations (Guest Post)

~Hello all, today we have a Guest Post from Samantha, thanks so much~

5 Kinds of Candy that are Perfect for Cake Decorations
If you want to make your cakes and cupcakes extra special you have to concentrate on the decoration. Icing and sprinkles work well here, but to really make your baked treats stand out and be noticed, you should consider sticking some candy on there.
There are loads of different kinds of candy - from rich chocolate to the retrosweets you used to get from old school vending machines - that work brilliantly as cake decorations, and here we will look at the top 5.
1) Chocolate fingers
Chocolate biscuits such as Cadbury’s are a great way to create a wall around the outside of your cake. They are the basis of a ‘swimming pool cake’, which is made using a sponge cake, chocolate fingers that reach an inch or so above the sponge and jello which is left to set within this delicious chocolate wall. A fantastic idea for a kids’ party.
2) M&Ms
If you would like to add some color, texture and chocolatey goodness to your cakes then M&Ms could be the answer. A sprinkling of these famous little chocolate discs in their colored sugary shells brightens up a plain cupcake or sponge, and the crunch they add makes every bite even more satisfying.
3) Popping candy
This crackling candy is the perfect ingredient to add a bit of fun and excitement to your baking. Kids especially love the sensation of little candy rocks popping and exploding in their mouths when they take a bite out of a birthday cake or a muffin. Popping candy cupcakes come especially recommended, and a light dusting on the top will really bring them to life.
4) American hard gums
For an extra sugary hit, some color and something different, you could add American hard gums to your baking. These chewy treats add a fun element to a cake or cupcake, but they could slow you down as you devour your dessert. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing??
5) Seasonal candy
Food is always used to celebrate different seasons and events, from Christmas to Halloween. And if you plan to bake something for these occasions there are pieces of candy that could top off your baking perfectly. Halloween in just around the corner so why not make a spooky All Hallows Eve cake, complete with candy tarantulas and sweet edible vampire fangs?!

Great cake decorating is all about being adventurous and having fun, so have a look in your candy cupboard and get creative!
